Wesley House was commissioned by John Wesley founder member of the Methodist church in 1772 at the same time the adjacent church was completed. It originally was home to the church minister until the upper level was added to the property in 1869. The minister then moved to the upper level. On July 6th 1849 George Scott Railton was born in the Manse. He went on to be the first commissioner of the Salvation army and second in command to General William Booth who founded the movement. There is a plaque commemorating Railton's life next to the property.

Wesley House was listed by historic Scotland 6th January 1980 as a C list. The church is also called the "Totum Kirkie". It gets this name due to it's octagonal shape and a "totum" was an eight sided spinning top back in the day. The church is the second oldest Methodist church in Scotland.
